NEWLY appointed Chapungu coach Tendai Chikuni has hit the ground running by beginning preparations with the Gweru-based PSL side.

Chikuni was appointed on Thursday last week on a three-year contract and has been given a target of a top eight finish this season.

This feat has eluded the Air Force of Zimbabwe side for the past three seasons.

Chikuni has recalled all players the club loaned out for assessment, saying he wants to give everyone a chance before scouting for reinforcements.

“I did not get the chance to see Chapungu playing last season because it was the same time I was doing duty with Shabanie Mine in Division One. I have therefore requested all the players who have been loaned out to be here so that I can assess everyone,” said Chikuni.

“So this whole week I will be in a position to judge areas which need attention and then we will bring in reinforcements during trials, which we will also conduct this week.”

Among the players that had been loaned out are former skipper Calisto Maheya, Talent Mwale, Tawanda Chokuwamba, winger Victor Bangira, former Hardbody goalie Alexander Useni and striker Brighton Mugoni.

“Sometimes they were loaning players, not necessarily because they could not play in the Premiership, but maybe it was a plan by the previous coach to assess them while out on loan,” Chikuni said.
