THE Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Association (Cosassa) athletes yesterday started trooping into camp at Northlea High School in preparation for the Cosassa Games set for Lesotho.

The Games will run from April 30 to May 2.

“We’ve begun our training and are pleased because the Cosassa games are almost here. We’ll be conducting our training in a manner that gradually takes the athletes to peak form. They haven’t been active for close to three weeks now and they’re not at peak,” said Phillip Chikomwe, the team manager.

He said the team looks stronger compared to last year’s judging by the times clocked and distances thrown or jumped in field events.

Team Zimbabwe will use White City Stadium during their camp. The stadium was refurbished and turned into a world class facility last year as the country played host to the African Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Youth Games.

“Our training sessions will be conducted here at Northlea High School and White City Stadium. White City Stadium has got training facilities that are of international standards thanks to the Youth Games,” he said.

Head coach, Phakamile Lisimati said he was confident of the team’s abilities and promised they will do everything to inspire the athletes to do well.

“The location of our training camp is ideal because at the moment Bulawayo has the best training facilities that are of world class standard.

“The athletes will get a chance to work on the same facilities that are used by Olympic athletes,” Lisimati said.
