HARARE cyclist Nkulumo Dube was disqualified from the Flying Eagles Cycling Club Matopos Road Race yesterday.
Dube, who participated in the 75km men’s elite race, was disqualified for allegedly riding in a manner that caused a danger to himself and other road users. He is said to have been cycling from one end of the road to the other.

Mike Dos Santos, the chairperson of the Flying Eagles Cycling Club, confirmed that Dube was penalised for his zig zag cycling.

“Cyclists were warned before the race began that anyone who put other cyclists in danger will certainly be penalised,” said Dos Santos.

Dube, who was part of Team Zimbabwe at the 2011 Maputo All Africa Games and won this year’s edition of the Tour de Falcon, finished second before he was advised at the end of the race that he had been disqualified.

Dube finished the race a micro second behind eventual winner Lawrence Khumalo who crossed the line in one hour 59.53 minutes in a tightly contested event in which James Freeland had a puncture in the first half of the race forcing his sudden withdrawal from the race.

Rob Sinclair finished the race second after the disqualification of Dube in two hours and two minutes followed by Knowledge Khuphe in third position.

In the 40km open social race which was from Tshabalala Game Park entrance to Matopos National Park turn off, Mthokozisi Sibanda crossed the finishing line first.
