DJs shortchange fans: Sifelani

POPULAR radio DJ Kelvin “The Soul Supreme” Sifelani says revellers at nightspots are being shortchanged as DJs nowadays are taking the profession lightly, something which is compromising their acts.
The UK-based DJ who is on holiday in Zimbabwe said the entertainment industry back in the day was sophisticated as DJs would go out of their way to scout for music to entertain revellers and always made it a point they were ahead of others.

“There’s a big difference between using CDs to mix music and having a hallmark as a DJ. Most DJs nowadays don’t understand that deejaying is an art and less about skill,” Sifelani said.

“A skill is when someone uses virtual DJ to mix songs, of which anyone can do that. Revellers should hear the difference when Hitman, Otis Fraiser or Soul Supreme are on the decks in the club,” he said.

The former Radio 3 DJ said most present day DJs did not have a diverse playlist, as they confine themselves to house music from South Africa and Zim dancehall.

“If I can draw comparisons with what happened when I was deejaying and what is happening now is that we found it hard to find music, but had a diverse playlist. So we put more into our craft than those of these days who just source popular music on the Internet,” he said.

Sifelani who specialises in Soul and RnB said there was also a serious lack of night clubs in the country that afford people a dancefloor where they can dance.

“Harare, for example does not have many options for a proper night club as it’s filled with bars and pubs. People get into the spot, sit, drink and dance while they’re seated because there’s no designated dancefloor for those who consider dancing as an essential part of going out. This dampens the mood for club goers,” he said.

Sifelani said besides being on holiday, he was in the country to finalise bride price negotiations and would be married next year.

Pressed on who he was getting married to, Sifelani declined to comment, saying he would announce in due course.

The DJ will be in Bulawayo tomorrow for the “Old Skool Reunion gig” with Kaycee the Gig Master and Joe the OG at the Groove Night Club.

“I want people to be nostalgic and remember the good old days as they say. I’m excited to perform in Bulawayo after three years,” he said.
