YOUTHS have been urged to stay away from drugs although dancehall music promotes the smoking of marijuana which is detrimental to their future.
This was said by Red Fox Family DJs, Izy Vybz and MC Smallz on the sidelines of their show held at Club Forty 40 on Friday night. They were responding to questions about why they encouraged youths to smoke marijuana during their set.
MC Smallz said: “Did you know that if you smoke ganja in your house it is not illegal.”

He said it was a marketing gimmick by dancehall artistes and DJs to bring in crowds to their shows and keep them interesting. “Although the youths hear us chanting on the mic saying youths should smoke mbanje, we say they should stay away from drugs. That is a marketing strategy as dancehall artistes to be controversial, but what I can say is stay away from drugs,” said MC Smallz.

He said they would be doing a campaign to discourage drug and alcohol abuse. “Very soon we will be going into the ghetto to talk to the youths and tell them what is bad about drugs and alcohol abuse. We want the ghetto youth to grow up in a drug free society,” said MC Smallz.

He said the trick with getting to the top was to network with club and radio DJs. After their set local DJs went back to house and Kwaito and kept revellers on the dance floor.
