EIGHT western suburbs based cricketers have been selected to join the Old Mutual sponsored Heath Streak Academy side that will tour South Africa later this year.

The academy’s Under-13 and 14 teams are scheduled to travel to South Africa in the first week of December to play games in Boksburg, Johannesburg.

Five players, seam bowler Unathi Banda, wicketkeeper-batsman Munashe Chimusoro and all-rounders Mthobeki Ndlovu, Mveli Gumbo and Eugene Kondo, will join the academy’s Under-13 side, while the trio of Allen Mapholisa, Lionel Mutepfa and Brian Nkomo make their way into the Under-14s.

Mapholisa, Mutepfa and Nkomo are all-rounders.

Former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak said the eight aspiring cricketers from the western suburbs will train with the academy team at the Heath Streak Multi-Sports Academy stationed at McDonald Club, along Fourth Avenue extension in Bulawayo.

He said the academy’s coaches Boxie Mxolisi Dube and Sean Joseph did the selection process with the help of Matabeleland Tuskers Cricket Franchise’s assistant coach Pollock Mubhobho.

“We’re grateful to our corporate sponsor Old Mutual for their support that has made it possible for these youngsters to get opportunities to be part of the squad that will tour South Africa.

The eight youngsters will be incorporated into the academy’s team and will train with our coaches.

Being part of the group that will tour South Africa will give these youngsters exposure,” said Streak.

He said besides training and giving specialised training to aspiring cricketers, the Heath Streak Multi-Sports Academy’s holiday training programmes are underway.

“Our doors are open and with the schools’ cricket programme kicking off in the third term we’re bracing for a tight schedule.

“Those interested in attending our holiday training programmes can visit the office for more details,” Streak said — @ZililoR.
