Hlongwane to meet all national sports associations Makhosini Hlongwane

Bukhosi Mangena Sports Correspondent—
SPORT and Recreation Minister Makhosini Hlongwane and the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) will meet all national sporting associations tomorrow to apprise them on the new policy framework as well as to dissect problems bedevilling the sporting fratenity in the country. The get together is a follow-up to the series of familiarisation tours Hlongwane embarked on to meet sporting associations individually. Tomorrow’s conference will also try to address financial problems that have hampered all national sporting associations, with some even being forced to suspend major tournaments.

The SRC, which is responsible for sourcing government grants, cannot afford to fund national associations and has of late been solely focusing on national teams.

SRC corporate communications officer Tirivashe Nheweyembwa said the objectives of the new policy pronouncements were to map the way forward and work on new changes that will be introduced.

“We’ll have a strategic meeting with the minister and all associations to address a number of issues that have been bothering us. The grants issue will be one of the issues on the agenda that’ll be addressed among a whole lot of other subjects,” said Nheweyembwa.

Hlongwane recently urged all associations to embark on fundraising initiatives saying although his ministry had the will to bailout all national associations, resources did not permit.

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has failed to revive the National Rugby League after Delta Beverages, who were bankrolling their flagship competition, pulled the plug in 2014.
