THE Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association 2015 season took off on a low note, staging nine bouts at their first tournament of the year on Saturday at Manor Hotel, Bulawayo.The competition saw 15 pugilists from Bulawayo clubs — Tshaka, Lobengula, Nketa and army side Headquarters One Brigade (HQ One Brigade) — trading leather in the lightweight, welterweight, bantamweight and light welterweight divisions.

Lobengula’s Wiseman Tshuma won two lightweight matches knocking out Godknows Sithole of HQ One Brigade in the first bout and going on to beat Casper Mnkandla also of HQ One Brigade on points.

Mnkandla had won on points in the fourth bout against Milton Moyo of Lobengula.

Three more fights ended in knock outs with Assurance Moyo of Lobengula getting the better of HQ One Brigade’s Mthabisi Ndlovu in a welterweight bout.

Newcomer Ntando Gwebu of Nketa knocked out his club mate Shadreck Machaya.

Multi medalist at the Zimbabwe National Youth Games Brighton Masiyambumbi knocked out Edson Mapeku of HQ One Brigade in a welterweight fight.

Tshaka’s only representative at the tournament Andile Ncube got a rude awakening after another newcomer Ndanetsei Nyamukondiwa of Nketa beat him on points in the light welterweight division.

Ezwell Ndlovu, the Baba vice-chairman said they expect a bigger turnout at their March 21 bill set for Manor Hotel.

“We had sent invitations to Matabeleland North, Midlands and Matabeleland South provinces but they failed to send their boxers. The good thing about the weekend competition is that we had two novices in the form of Gwebu and Nyamukondiwa and there were a number of new guys who were observers. In our next tournament the number of bouts will be bigger as Mzilikazi Youth Centre have confirmed that they will be participating,” said Ndlovu.
