A BULAWAYO man used his employer’s vehicle for hire in a bid to make up for his four months unpaid salary.
Raymond Mawoyo, 35, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Themba Chimiso charged for unlawful use of a motor vehicle.Prosecuting Mitchelle Chiboiwa said Mawoyo used the motor vehicle for a purpose which was not authorised by his employer while he was on duty.

The court heard that on July 10 Mawoyo was driving along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road after having been sent by his employer to Hwange Colliery to collect coal.

After reaching Gwayi road, he diverted from the route and turned into a dusty road towards Lusulu while carrying a load of maize without the authority from the company.

“Mawoyo went on a journey that was of his personal gain with his employer’s truck,” said Chiboiwa.

After driving for 118km, the vehicle broke down and the engine among other components, were damaged. The value of the damage was put at $4,400.

Mawoyo reported the matter to his company’s manager and the truck was towed back to Bulawayo, but it was discovered that when the incident occurred, he was carrying maize without authorisation.

The truck driver pleaded guilty to the charge.
