AN 18-year-old man who was caught bonking his neighbour’s goat left the gallery in stitches when he blamed his actions on evil spirits. Mqhelisi Gumbo of Ngwala area in Bulilima woke up in the middle of the night and proceeded to Justin Ndlovu’s kraal where he had sex with the goat. Ndlovu heard his goat bleating and went to investigate.

Gumbo was convicted of bestiality on his own plea of guilty by Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa.

He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment. Three months were, however, suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining six months were suspended on condition that Gumbo performs 210 hours of community service at Malambuka clinic.

The teenager claimed that evil spirits had driven him into committing the offence. “Your Worship I don’t even know how I got to the kraal in the middle of the night. I don’t recall leaving my bedroom hut and heading to my neighbour’s homestead. I only remember being caught by my neighbour and when I came to my senses I realised that I was having sexual intercourse with his goat. I would have never done something like that in my normal senses because I have a girlfriend. Please, forgive me,” said Gumbo.
