MATABELELAND South will this year host the ninth edition of the National Paralympics Games from April 5-9.

Sports and Recreation Commission provincial co-ordinator Lifa Mpofu said the official launch of the games has been set for February 5 at a venue to be decided.

“There is still a lot to be done in terms of preparations and we are still appealing for funding. We’re going to hold fundraising activities to boost our coffers so that we finish our preparations on time. We will present our state of preparedness at the launch to the chef de missions from all provinces as well as competition directors,” said Mpofu.

He said each provincial team would be required to pay affiliation fees at the launch to confirm their participation.

“Committees have done their work and we are now preparing for the launch. A lot has been done on the ground as we have been running around to ensure grounds are renovated for the competitions.

“We’ve got certain grounds that are not in good shape and attention is being given to them so that we finish on time. We’re also going to install ramps for the special group of athletes.”

Some of the venues that will stage the games include Pelandaba Stadium, Colleen Bawn, Blanket Mine and Vumbachikwe Mine, among others.

The 10th edition of the games will be held in Mashonaland Central.
