POLICE yesterday said they had arrested seven MDC-T activists on Monday for holding an unsanctioned demonstration in Harare.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said they were also investigating an incident where The Zimbabwe Mail photographer Angela Jimu was “caught up in the disorder.”
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm that seven MDC-T activists were arrested on 18 August for participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence and breaches of peace thus violating Section 37 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23,” said Chief SuptNyathi.

“In the process, Angela Jimu, a journalist with The Zimbabwe Mail newspaper, was also caught up in the disorder that ensued. Police have since launched investigations into the incident involving the journalist.”

Chief Supt Nyathi said while the constitution spells out certain rights which individuals enjoy in a democratic society, “it must be noted that these rights should not impinge on other Zimbabweans’ rights”.

“Police have a constitutional duty to maintain law and order in the country and would like to warn the public against participating in unsanctioned demonstrations.”
