Durban – More than 200 illegal immigrants have been detained in KwaZulu-Natal during the past two days, police said yesterday. Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that 51 illegal immigrants were detained in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday while more than 160 were detained during raids in the Durban central business district on Tuesday night.

Zwane said the raids involved more than 100 members of police, the eThekwini Metro police and the SA National Defence Force.

He said quantities of heroin had also been seized as well as some weapons.

“We’re still finalising numbers of everything that was found and will issue a statement later,” he said.

The raids were part of ongoing operations in KwaZulu-Natal.

It was not immediately known if any South Africans were arrested and for which offences. — AFP
