Mudzingwa, Kutsanzira missed

THE absence of suspended skipper Erick Mudzingwa and his injured deputy Rahman Kutsanzira has been felt at Highlanders as the Bulawayo giants were crudely exposed in their last three games.

Bosso have lost two and squeezed a win in their last three games.

Highlanders lost on penalties to a largely inexperienced Dynamos side in a pulsating Independence Cup final before a capacity crowd at the giant National Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

The match could have ended in regulation time had it not been for a last gasp penalty awarded to them by referee Brighton Chimene. Veteran striker Ralph Matema levelled matters from the resultant spot kick to force the match into the dreaded penalty lottery.

Bosso though could argue that DeMbare would not have scored had Chimene blown his whistle after second assistant referee Claris Simango raised her flag for an offside against the Harare outfit. The raised flag resulted in goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda moving out of his line in anticipation of a free-kick, but as he retreated upon noticing that play was still on, Masimba Mambare pounced. Simango ought to have kept her flag up.

But despite the debatable match referee’s decisions, Highlanders had struggled, particularly in midfield, and that has been the case since the injury of Kutsanzira in the 3-0 demolition of FC Platinum and Mudzingwa’s red card against Shabanie Mine.

The two players are gifted with ball passing skills and marking, and they usually win possession and give the ball to players like young Brian Banda, Allan Gahadzikwa and Simon Munawa.

Kutsanzira is also a good dribbler and passer of the ball, while Mudzingwa is a grafter in the crucial midfield department.

While Munawa wins the ball, Gahadzikwa and Banda rarely do so, meaning Bosso are always in danger when opponents are in possession. Strikers Prince Dube and Rodrick Mutuma have been seen in the midfield territory trying to win the ball and if they do, they can only pass it within or send a back pass because there won’t be anyone upfront.

Highlanders have only managed two goals in open play in the three matches they have played without Kutsanzira and Mudzingwa, but managed to score three in one match when the duo was present.

“We badly need the two players; that is why there is no opportunity to change our style of play if our initial plan fails. We tried it yesterday but it did not have that impact hence the reason we badly miss Kutsanzira and Mudzingwa,” said coach Erol Akbay.

Kutsanzira, said Akbay, might make his return this weekend when they play bogey side ZPC Kariba at Barbourfields Stadium.

Mudzingwa returns for the away trip to Tsholotsho on Wednesday next week.

Rubbish. You guys were making noise about Rodrick what the heck is he doing now ?

The Highlanders technical team is arrogant and hence the poor displays in the last few games because they are over dependant on the spent force players like Munawa. The guy is too old cannot run 90 mins , is not a good marker and fail to supply clean and quick balls to Prince and Mutumwa. The current midfielders are too slow to release balls to strikers and always play balls in circles instead of attack minded. Substitution is always late or wrong players taken out instead of the tired Munawa or Gahadzikwa. Where are the youngsters who can run for 90 mins. Do not underrate Silla, Nadolo and Makaruse as they are the future engine room for Bosso at the expense dead wood. Munawa needs just 30mins or 45 mins and anything more he will be a passenger. Wake up and give youngsters a chance. Avoid treating players as if they are indespensible

The current team only lack attack minded midfielders and quick players. Mutumwa and Prince are good strikers but are overworked as they run and look for balls which hardly come from midfielders. Just put one exprienced player in the middle and combine with youngsters the team will click. Munawa and Gahadzikwa have no pace in modern soccer

Godfrey Makaruse King Nadolo Adrian Silla Bukhosi Sibanda ,give them game time instead of passengers like Munawa and Gahadzikwa ,Amin is very arrogant because uMnawa ngumfanakhe we have oNhlanhla lets use them coz Matema Gahadzikwa Mnawa Honest asilabo for long ,they have to be serious coz wat u are saying is we cant win without Rahman and Mudzingwa??Bosso is too big an institution to rely on 2players…hayiboo ngiyala mina..

This is not quite accurate Mr Reporter.Eric Mudzingwa has been a liability to the team for quite some time, principally because of lack of basic skill. He is a poor passer of the ball,so even if he wins a few in midfield, the team does not benefit because he simply gives the initiative to the opponents in the very next move. The solution might be giving the central midfield role to Brain Banda and King Nadolo/Allan Gahadzikwa then Makarutse on the left and Adrian Silla on the right,to give our midfield the mobility and dexterity it is badly crying for right now.Simon Munawa has seen better days, even the famous hard shot at goal, for which he is apparently solely fielded in the team these days, will not come every day in the match.Tendai Ngulube at the base of midfield is so inconsistent that the team can not rely on him all the time.So the technical department must give our youngsters a chance. They showed their potential in the last game of last season, albeit in a dead rubber, what they can do. As for the Dutch coach Akbay, I think the jury is sill out.He has not convinced me that he is better than our local coaches. He seems to have run out of ideas and his tired explanations as to why the team is always over run in midfield or why he seems to have one tactic to every game(siting back), have become comical. How he does not realize that playing on the front foot, especially at home, will get the crowd behind the team so that they can create more scoring chances, beats me.His team has failed to score in regulation time in three games at home so far. He cannot be allowed to get away with this.
