MZILIKAZI district dominated the two-day National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Bulawayo inter-district track and field competition that ended at White City Stadium yesterday.

Mzilikazi hauled 46 gold, 37 silver and 35 bronze medals.

Reigate district were second with 26 gold, 27 silver and 31 bronze medals followed by Bulawayo Central district who managed 18 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze medals.

Bulawayo Nash head-in-charge of athletics Peter Gambiza said they used the competition to select a team to represent the province at the national finals to be held at Lomagundi College from March 30-31.

“We had a very successful event with the schools bringing their best athletes. The competition was tough, but the best shone. Our next mission is the nationals that will be held next week in Chinhoyi and we will be taking every gold medalist from today’s event,” said Gambiza.

Having dominated the competition in most events, Mzilikazi district got their first gold medal in the 15 years and under boys’ 100m dash when Ronald Muchichwa clocked a time of 11.36 seconds followed by Bulawayo Central district’s Thulani Maseko (11.43s) and Reigate’s Fortune Sithole (11.69s).

Reigate’s Sharlane Kasema won gold in the 17 and under girls’ 200m race in a time of 26.21 seconds followed by Mzilikazi’s Plenty Ncube (26.53s).

Precious Nyathi (Bulawayo Central) was third in 26.86 seconds.

Mzilikazi’s Thabo Ndlovu won in the 17 and under boys’ javelin with a throw of 37.55 metres followed by Imbizo’s Admire Tavashwe, who threw 37.31m.

Bulawayo Central’s Ethan Wilson was third with a throw of 34.65m. In the boys’ 17 and under 3 000m race, Mzilikazi dominated the event scooping all three medals. Admire Chiwambo clocked a time of nine minutes 20.87 seconds to win gold, Freedom Banda (9:27:63) took silver and Mkhokheli Sibanda (9:31:31) settled for bronze.

Mzilikazi district’s duo of Takudzwa Chigwida and Alicarte Matiza scooped gold and silver respectively in the 20 and under boys’ 800m race in two minutes 01.79 seconds and two minutes 02.15 seconds. Bulawayo Central’s Thabo Nkomo was third after clocking two minutes 05.24 seconds.

Meanwhile, Beberton Mhlanga from ZRP Fairbridge was the only qualifier for the semi-finals of the Coca-Cola Four-Minute Mile to be held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) on April 28.

Mhlanga crossed the line in a time of four minutes 28.79 seconds to join 17 other athletes that have already qualified for the event. The Coca-Cola Four Minute Mile is a male competition with a prerequisite time of four minutes 31 seconds for one to qualify for the finals bankrolled by Delta Beverages
