NATO launches air strikes in Tripoli

Al-Libiya TV channel reported that there were casualties.
“Tripoli is now subjected to air strikes. There are civilian casualties,” a presenter said.
Reuters correspondents reported hearing four blasts and saw plumes of smoke rising from the southeast of the city.
Heavy anti-aircraft fire was also heard, before and after the blasts.
One photographer said she saw a jet in the sky moments before one loud explosion that threw up a plume of smoke.
A second correspondent said he could see smoke rising from the southeast of the city after hearing four blasts.
Earlier yesterday, a Reuters witness said Libyan government forces fired anti-aircraft guns at NATO warplanes from positions in central Tripoli.
The witness said coalition jets appeared to have increased their number of sorties over the capital and could be heard flying overhead throughout the morning and early afternoon.
Libyan television yesterday broadcast footage of Gaddafi driving around Tripoli in an open-top sports utility vehicle and said the outing occurred while the Libyan capital was being bombed by NATO.
Wearing a green safari hat, dark glasses and a black jacket, state television showed Gaddafi pumping his fists in the air and waving.
A screen caption said the trip had taken place a short while ago, while the Libyan capital was under NATO air attack.
NATO yesterday threw its weight behind growing calls for Gadaffi to quit, as rebels fighting to topple the veteran Libyan strongman reported an intensive blitz by alliance warplanes and as loud blasts were heard in Tripoli.
The port area of Libya’s besieged third city Misrata came under heavy attack by government forces, who fired dozens of Grad missiles and tank shells that killed at least 13 people and wounded 50, a rebel spokesman said. – Reuters.
