Uproar over school sodomy

Last week, The Herald reported that the 19-year-old visually impaired headboy allegedly sodomised 10 dormitory mates earlier this year.
Importance Muranganwa admitted to committing the offence and is due to appear in court when he finishes writing his Grade Seven examinations.
However, parents were fuming that he is allowed to go to the school without regard for their or their children’s feelings.
They also claimed the headmistress, identified as Mrs Raramayi, tried to cover up the abuse and provided counselling services for the affected pupils — aged 10 to 12 — without their knowledge.

When The Herald called the headmistress on her mobile phone, she immediately switched it off when she realised she was talking to the Press.
In an interview, the provincial education director for Mashonaland East, Mr Sylvester Matshaka, said the Education Ministry was still waiting for the school’s disciplinary report.
This is despite the alleged offence having stretched from July to September.
He said: “It is the school that recommends what action they want us to take after a disciplinary hearing then we take appropriate action.

“We are still waiting for them to bring the disciplinary report to us.
“Without that report there is nothing we can do as it is the school’s responsibility to compile the report.”
Mr Matshaka said the ministry had sent a psychologist to the school to counsel the children while the district education office in Murehwa was conducting its own investigations.

Mr Alexio Turuza said: “I do not think it is proper for this boy to remain in the school together with our children.
“The school should just be sensitive and send the boy away. If not, we are going to withdraw our boys from the school.”
Another parent — whose son was a victim of the alleged abuse — said it was ridiculous that the school had in the first place allowed a 19-old-boy to sleep in the same room with minors.
