Warriors move up on Fifa rankings

Zimbabwe were in position 118 with 246 points last month, but gained 18 points despite their inactivity to start the month of February on 264 points.
Last month, the Warriors were rated 29th on the Confederation of African Football rankings but have moved one place up to 28th according to the rankings released on Wednesday this week.

In December 2010, the Warriors were ranked 119th in the world and 29th in Africa.
It is on the world rankings that Zimbabwe have made some significant strides this time as they nestled into position 113 despite the two months of inactivity.

The Warriors leap-frogged Iceland, Central African Republic, Wales, Suriname and the United Arab Emirates, who were placed ahead of Zimbabwe last month. Zimbabwe’s last match was a 3-1 win over the Green Mambas of Mozambique at the end of November 2010 and since then the Warriors have been inactive.

Madinda Ndlovu was in charge of the team in Maputo and he will once again be under the spotlight today when Zimbabwe play Niger in an African Nations Championship Group B tie in Sudan.
The match in Wad Medani would be Ndlovu’s second in charge of the national team on a caretaker basis as Zifa are still struggling to appoint a substantive national team coach.
Last year acting chief executive Jonathan Mashingaidze gave the nation an assurance that Zifa would have appointed a national team coach by Christmas at the earliest or by the end of December at the latest.

However, Zifa are yet to announce a new coach although former CAPS United coach Charles Mhlauri is the front runner for the hot seat.
Ghana have eclipsed African champions Egypt as the best-placed African team with the Black Stars of Ghana placed 15th in the world.

The Warriors will on Wednesday play the Black Stars at the CHAN tournament.
Egypt tumbled by a massive 23 places to drop into third position and 33rd in the world.
Cote d’Ivoire are the second-best African side while Zimbabwe’s other rivals in Pool B in Sudan, South Africa, are ranked 47th in the world and eighth in Africa.
Niger, who open their CHAN account against Zimbabwe in Wad Medani today, are also rated higher than the Warriors as they are 96th in the world football rankings.
World champions Spain remain the top-ranked team in the world while World Cup finalists the Netherlands are second. Meanwhile, the Mighty Warriors are ranked 103rd in the women’s Fifa/Coca Cola rankings.-The Herald
