SPORTS journalists from the southern region last Friday unanimously agreed to change the association’s name from the Sports Writers’ Association of Zimbabwe (Swaz) to Sports Journalists Association (Spoja).

Elections for a substantive committee have been set for April 5.

Revival of the sports journalists’ grouping started at the beginning of this month with the appointment of a normalisation committee led by sports broadcaster Muziwethu Hadebe.

Elections were initially set for today, but were pushed back to allow more sports journalists to join the association. Joining fee is $5 and monthly subscription is pegged at $2.

The association agreed that only paid up members will be eligible to vote in elections that will be supervised by the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists.

Spoja is expected to be more appealing to the corporate world compared to Swaz, which was tainted by rampant infighting.

The southern region has about 33 potential members authenticated by their respective sports editors.
