THE Zimbabwe women’s bowling team won gold at the International Quadrangular and Senior Series Lawn Bowls tournament held at the Hillside Bowling Club in Bulawayo over the weekend.

The Zimbabwe team scored 12 points to win the ladies’ event.

Kerry Craven led her team to victory in the fours and triples competition while Jane Rigby and Debbie Robertson won the pairs and singles encounters.

Ally Dale and Melanie James played in the singles and pairs games, but failed to win any medals.

Matabeleland Bowling Association (MBA) secretary Boni van Heerden said they were delighted by the ladies’ performance.

“We’re happy with the performance of the ladies team. They managed to scoop the gold medal for us after staving off strong resistance from South Africa,” said van Heerden.

South Africa dominated the men’s quadrangular with an impressive display of skill, team work and discipline. A lacklustre performance by the Zimbabwe men’s team disappointed spectators and supporters alike.

The team was made up of Denis Streak, Tom Craven, Clive Robertson, Jono Evans and Terry Bowes.

South Africa also won the men and women’s senior series competition.

Van Heerden said the tournament was a great success and players were impressed with the state of the pitch and accommodation provided by the association.

She said the competitions came in handy for the Zimbabwe team as it exposed the players to high levels of competition ahead of the African States tournament to be held in Lusaka, Zambia, next month.
