A new Gweru suburb, Randolph, with 1 812 stands, is coming up.

It has two phases and is situated next to Daylesford, Nehosho and Fletcher areas.

Gweru’s housing waiting list stands at 34 280 home seekers.

In an interview, the local authority’s public relations officer Ms Vimbai Chingwaramusee said:

“I can confirm that plans are at an advanced stage for a new suburb that will have 1 812 stands in the City of Gweru called Randolph suburb. Stands in Randolph phase one are 456 while phase two has 1 356 stands.”

Ms Chingwaramusee said servicing that includes road construction and installation of water and sewer reticulation services is in progress for both projects.

“Randolph phase two started in 2021 while phase one started in 2007. Stands have been sold out for both projects,” she said.

She said the local authority remains committed to improving service delivery through the provision of housing and commercial stands.

Meanwhile, Gweru, in a move that might address refuse collection challenges, is inviting interested members of the community with trucks and complete refuse compactor trucks to submit bids for possible hire of their vehicles for solid waste removal.

Council’s obsolete refuse collection equipment has resulted in the local authority failing to remove refuse on time.

Some residents have indicated that they have gone for a month without refuse being collected by the local authority in their areas.

In a public notice signed by the Acting Town Clerk, Mr Vakai Douglas Chikwekwe, council said it is looking forward to hiring trucks from members of the public for refuse collection services.

“Following challenges experienced in the collection of solid waste, City of Gweru invites interested members of the community owning (a) Trucks ranging between 3,5 tonnes and 10 tonnes (b) Complete Refuse Compactor Trucks with a carrying capacity ranging from 19 to 21 cubic metres to submit their bids to the Procurement Manager for consideration and possible hire of their vehicles for solid waste removal,” said Mr Chikwekwe.

He said the designated areas for collection of solid waste include all high, medium, and low-density areas citywide.

“The project will involve solid waste removal from the households through door-to-door collection system at designated central collection points where the refuse will be transferred into council’s refuse compactor trucks,” said Mr Chikwekwe.

“Completed bids must be enclosed in a sealed envelope endorsed in the outside health services — solid waste removal-community based organisations (truckers)’ and must be deposited in the tender box at the Chamber Secretary’s department, on or before the end of business on September 16.”
