African film industry gears  up for prestigious AMVCAs Femi Odugbemi - AMVCA head judge

MultiChoice Africa and Africa Magic have announced the dates for the 10th annual Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), scheduled to take place on May 10 and 11.

The AMVCAs is an annual set of accolades presented by MultiChoice, to recognise outstanding achievements in film and television production in Africa.

The two-day awards event being sponsored by Amstel, Pepsi, Promasidor and Martell,  will start with the Young Filmmakers and Content Creators event, on the morning of May 10, followed by the Cultural Day and Opening Night celebration and the Main Awards Ceremony, on May 11.

Charity Njanji, the head of corporate affairs and public relations at MultiChoice Zimbabwe, announced that the esteemed awards competition for 2024 will feature acclaimed filmmaker, director, producer, and pioneer Academy director of the MultiChoice Talent Factory in Lagos, Femi Odugbemi, as the head judge.

“The choice of Femi Odugbemi to lead the jury is good news, especially as it re-affirms the high standing and major contribution of the MultiChoice Talent Factory initiative,” Njanji said.

She said the head judge described the AMVCAs as “celebrated for an unwavering dedication to excellence”.

“He also said the jury would be steadfast in ensuring that only the most outstanding works earned a spot on the nomination list,” she said.

The AMVCA concept, Njanji said, has established itself as the benchmark for excellence in the African film industry.

“The AMVCAs are popular and widely followed across Africa, including here in Zimbabwe, and we’re pleased to see that plans are advanced for the staging of the latest edition, which promises another tribute to the talent in the world of film across the continent,” she said.

“Each award event is not only a celebration of excellence in film-making, but also an activity that improves careers and boosts talent development on the continent.”

She said entries have been received from across Africa.

“Shortlisting has commenced, and soon after, the judging phases will follow. Noteworthy adjustments have been made to the award categories, notably, winners of the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, will now be determined by the jury.”

The final nominees in each category, will be unveiled live across all Africa Magic channels at 8pm on Sunday, March 24th. After the announcement, the voting portal will swiftly open, allowing viewers to cast their votes.
