BULAWAYO Metropolitan Cricket will this weekend hold preliminary T20 matches to select a squad for the Provincial T20 series set for Harare in a fortnight.

The Harare series will be used to give the players a chance to challenge for places in the Zimbabwe squad for the T20 World Cup that will be held in India in March.

The Metropolitan board has cancelled all league fixtures to make way for the preliminaries.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket chairman Vumi Moyo said: “We will be having our T20 preliminaries over the weekend and we have put on hold the lower sides because that will mean too much work for us. We came up with this tourney to select a squad that will represent us in the provincials in Harare.”

He said they would assemble a strong squad despite missing some big names who are in the Zimbabwe A side that is presently playing against Afghanistan A in a four-day match series in India.

“As a province I know we have great talent and we will produce a strong squad that will surely impress.

“I know that we have a couple of big names that will be missing due to national duty, but that is not a set back because it also gives other younger players a chance to shine,” Moyo said.

League anchors Roosters will play against Queens Sports Club at Queens today starting from 9AM, while BAC will take on Emakhandeni at BAC.

The second round tomorrow will see BAC clashing with Queens Sports Club at BAC at 9.30AM, while Emakhandeni take on Roosters at Queens.

Teams that finish on position three and four will play against each other at BAC, whilst the top two will then clash for supremacy at Queens.
