THE Highlanders nomination process closes at 12PM today with six candidates expected to successfully submit their nomination forms for the two posts that will be contested on February 7.

The electoral committee of Jonathan Moyo who is the head, Cosmos Sikhosana, Davis Sibanda, Elkannah Dube and Luke Mnkandla, has been tasked with verifying the qualification of the candidates.

The positions of vice chairman held by Harare based Mgcini Sibhalo Mpofu and that of treasurer, held by Donald Ndebele are up for grabs.

Ndebele will be contested by city banker Charles Ndlovu. Another prospective candidate for the treasurer’s post Charles Nondo, who lost to Jerry Sibanda in 2013 decided against running again after consulting his family. Senior Zesa official, Methuseli Mafu said he had big commitments and would therefore not contest.

“I will be doing the club a huge disservice if I contest as I am presently tied up with other errands,” said Mafu.

Four candidates will seek members’ mandate to occupy the vice chairman’s post. These are incumbent Mgcini Mpofu, Nkosinathi Ncube who has lost twice before, Harare based businessman Morden Ngwenya as well as city businessman and philanthropist Kenneth Mhlophe.

Mhlophe, a retired senior army officer, is believed to have also received the backing of some influential former Highlanders players as well as vocal supporters’ club, Heart and Soul who usually hold their weekly meetings at Hlabangana Lounge at the club house.

All the candidates have promised to turn around the team’s fortunes especially the brand Highlanders through their various contacts although some sections within the club argue that those with business contacts must be seen to be assisting the club even when not in office.

There is no controversy expected this time around from the electoral committee who caused a stir last year with the shock disqualification of pre election favourite Ernest Maphepha Sibanda who was challenging incumbent chairman Peter Dube.
