HIGHLANDERS’ supporters club Heart and Soul chairman Peacot Hadebe has thrown his name into the hat for consideration as a committee member in the club’s executive in elections set for early February 2018.

The position is presently held by Wisdom Mabhena, who is likely to seek re-election. Should Mabhena be re-elected, he will become the longest serving executive committee member, with nine years of service in the same portfolio.

Hadebe’s entry into the elections will trigger a battle royale for the committee member’s post, with him being backed by a strong membership from his Heart and Soul Club.

“I have decided to contest for the committee member’s position after being asked by club members to do so. I know that the secretary-general’s post is also up for grabs, but I believe I will best serve the club as a committee member. Ngifuna ukuqala phansi (I want to start from the bottom),” said Hadebe.

Heart and Soul has been heavily involved in the club’s match day preparations, with its members offsetting the first team’s camping expenses for home games. The members also travelled to support the team in away matches.

On Saturday, the supporters’ club was hailed by Highlanders’ president Jimmy Ncube for helping the club financially and in kind over the years.

Highlanders’ members will elect a new chairman, secretary-general and committee member at the club’s annual general meeting in February next year.

Businessman Kenneth Mhlophe has already thrown his name into the hat for the Bosso chairmanship.

Mhlophe hopes to take over from the suspended Peter Dube, who will automatically be ruled out of the race after the Zifa assembly deferred its annual general meeting to next year. The Zifa assembly was due to deliberate on Dube’s suspension and decide whether or not to lift it.

Incumbent secretary-general Emmett Ndlovu is not expected to seek re-election, although he is yet to make an official pronouncement.

Ndlovu has served the club for over two decades, starting as the first team’s physiotherapist before being appointed manager.
