BULAWAYO Athletics Board (Bab) will honour outstanding athletes that represented the province in this year’s events after Sunday’s 10km Liquor Hub Fun Run.

The fun run, which will draw the country’s top runners, will be Bab’s last event of the year.

Manuel Mpofu, the Bab chairman, said that they had shortlisted 14 athletes for the provincial awards.

Athletes in line for the province’s senior men top gong are Sipho Moyo of Ihlosi Athletics Club, Bulawayo Jumbos’ Willard Mutasa and the ZRP Fairbridge trio of Trust Chidomaya, Isaac Mpofu and Ngonidzashe Ncube.

The senior women’s awards shortlist has Faith Dube of Bulawayo Polytechnic, ZRP Fairbridge’s Anne Chirisa and independent athlete Linnet Tom.

Bab will also honour junior athletes and the boys’ category has the Mpopoma High School duo of Ronald Muchichwa and Brian Ndlovu as well as Dumo Mkhwananzi from Sparrows. Miranda Mathe from Ihlosi and Mpopoma’s pair of Cynthia Taderera and Sandra Taderera are competing for the junior women’s category.

“As Bab we felt we should celebrate our athletes and reward them for raising Bulawayo’s flag at national competitions this season. We also hope these awards will inspire up-and-coming athletes to take athletics seriously,” said Mpofu.

Meanwhile, registration for the 10km Liquor Hub Fun Run closes tomorrow evening at Liquor Hub, along Fife Street, between Fourth and Fifth Avenues.

Mpofu said top runners that include Kevin Pangiso, Nkosiyazi Sibanda, Chidomaya, Isaac Mpofu, Olivia Chitate and the Nyasango sisters Constance and Faith, had confirmed their participation in Sunday’s race.

The winner of the senior men and women’s categories will pocket $500, with their first runners-up getting $300 and third-placed athletes pocketing $200.
