THE winner of the 2011 Hwange Open Golf tournament and top golfer Tongo Charamba has confirmed participation in this year’s edition of the event that tees off on Friday with the Pro-Ams.
Charamba, who has been a consistent performer in the last three editions of the tournament, set to be bankrolled once again by leading mining equipment supplier Chaferfly Enterprises, said he had been practising hard for one of the country’s prime golf tournaments.

“I will be there again this year,” said the Chapman Golf Club of Harare golfer who came second in 2012 to Bulawayo’s Brian Gondo and again in 2013 when he was beaten by Robson Saurombe. Charamba was just a stroke behind.

“I am preparing well, working hard on and off the course, driving range and going to the gym a lot,” he said.
Charamba is, however, wary of the Hwange Golf Course which has on many times been described as very challenging.

He said the course was different from most of the courses in Harare and South Africa where he usually competes.
“Besides the course, the other thing to worry about are the temperatures there. The heat makes it even worse for outsiders but a definite advantage to locals like Phillip Tshuma and Steven Simukai,” said Charamba.

Besides Tshuma and Simukai, other golfers set to have a go at this year’s big prize include the defending champion Saurombe, Ignatious Mketekete, Shane Pringle and Peter Banda.
