IT was one way traffic in the Kwekwe derby as Chrome Stars ran riot thumping a hapless Silo United 5-1 in a Zifa Central Soccer League encounter.
The chrome miners got their goals from hattrick hero Chrispen Mbewe before Paul Nyakuipa and former Silo United player Alpharomeo Shirichena added a goal apiece to condemn the GMB sponsored side to their ninth defeat of the season.

The win by Chrome Stars raised their championship hopes which appeared to have gone off the rails in the previous games and now lie second on the log standings with 29 points from 15 matches.

Stars are now three points behind Wha Wha who are on pole position but have a game in hand which they play tomorrow against ZRP Beitbridge in a top of the table clash at the prison grounds.

Despite the convincing win, Stars coach, Yolam Ngwira still insists that his side is not gunning for promotion.
“We are playing to compete and we are not at all worried with what is happening in the promotional race. If anything it will be a bonus for us to be promoted as we are on a rebuilding mission,” said Ngwira.

Elsewhere, ambitious Gweru City did themselves a favour by edging Gaths Mine 2-1 at Wilson Fields and remain odds-on favourites to land the Central Region sole promotional ticket.

“Chiwororo” as Gweru City are affectionately known drew first blood through Wellington Juakinyu before Kudzanai Kwashi levelled proceedings through a penalty five minutes before the breather.

City substitute Owen Motsi with his first touch restored his side’s advantage to ensure that the Gweru side collected maximum points.
Despite the win City slid a place down to fifth on the table with 28 points but have a game in hand in which Tongogara are said to have used an ineligible player which is now subject to disciplinary proceedings.
