THE Cold Storage Company is yet to come up with an action plan to deal with waste management after its operations were condemned by the Environmental Management Authority.CSC is one of several companies whose waste disposal management systems have been found to be defective.

According to an update report seen by Business Chronicle and presented at a meeting of affected companies held at Mhlahlandlela government complex in Bulawayo, the company is yet to come up with an action plan.

“CSC have not submitted their action plan. Major problem is the drying of cow dung,” reads the report in part.

Other companies that have been affected by the order include Lobels, Belmont Leathers, Delta, funeral parlours, Zambezi Tanneries and Agritex.

The report shows that CSC is conducting internal tests and servicing its system that dries cow dung. It is also increasing its labour so as to quickly facilitate the drying of cow dung.

Funeral parlours which were also affected by the ban appealed to EMA for exemption on pre-treatment plant.

“. . . The letter explained the process they follow when they deal with dead bodies, there is no need for a pre-treatment plant,” according to the report.

Lobels is one of the few companies that had taken positive steps towards the upliftment of the ban as it has come up with its action plan.

“We have implemented a drip fill, also working on chemicals that neutralise sugar,” the report read. The company also revived a plant that had since ceased functioning in a bid to get its ban lifted.

“Lobels have an existing plant that is now working, when the order was given the plant was not working but have since cleaned it up,” reads part of the report.

According to the report, Zambezi Tanneries, another affected company, undertook corrective measures and has since resumed operations.

“They provided an action plan and they have started operating,” read the report. The report, however, shows that the company was facing challenges with the city council that is allegedly taking its time to respond to the challenges.
