OVER 20 cyclists are expected to take part in the Volta de Bulawayo Cycling Tour from tomorrow up to Sunday. The tour will enable cyclists to earn points needed to participate in international competitions.

The three-day tour will feature United States-based cyclist Bright Chipongo and Nkululeko Dube from Bulawayo who took part in the recent African Games.

Thomas Classen and his team, which cycled in the climate change awareness campaign, as well as a Botswana team, will also be part of the tour.

Chrispen Kazingizi, chairman of race organising team at Eagles Cycling Club, said they were wrapping up plans for adequate security measures to ensure the safety of the cyclists and the public.

“We’re expecting talented cyclists and a large crowd. We want to encourage other cyclists to join us and that’s why Sunday is open for everyone to race in the social competition,” said Kazingizi. He said he hoped the team from the climate change campaign would have rested enough having cycled 800KM in two weeks.

A 1,5KM sprint from Tshabalala Game Park along Matopos Road will mark the beginning of the event tomorrow afternoon.

On Saturday, cyclists will race in the 8KM, with the elite event being the 120KM cycle that starts at Southwold shopping centre on Sunday. There will also be an 80KM race on Sunday.

Participating cyclists will fork out $30 for the whole tour and $15 for just one event.
