A DUIKER was on Monday found in Bulawayo’s New Magwegwe suburb raising speculation among residents that the animal could have been used for witchcraft purposes.

The animal was picked by some youths who brought it to The Chronicle offices where it was later taken by officials from Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management.

Given Mashava said some residents had never seen a duiker.

“We were just sitting by the shops and saw it near Magwegwe Terminus. There is no bush where one can say it might have strayed from. This made some people to conclude that it was used for witchcraft purposes. Where could it have come from?” he asked.

He said after contemplating on the next move for some time, he chased after the animal.

“I chased and picked it up before taking it to the police station. It seems it was being kept in a house because it didn’t take us time to catch up with it. Normally duikers are very speedy and you wouldn’t easily catch it even if you’re hunting with dogs,” he said.

Mashava said police officers Magwegwe Police Station to take it to Zimparks.

“The police were also shocked to see the animal but said they couldn’t be of any assistance,” said Mashava.

He said it was also shocking was that the animal was found without a tail.

According to the African Wildlife Foundation website, duikers are popular in some areas as charms against evil spirits.
