IN the vibrant suburb of Entumbane, a remarkable initiative has emerged, capturing the hearts and minds of residents as they embark on a collective effort to raise funds for an ambulance that will serve their community. What started as a WhatsApp group fundraising project has now gained significant momentum, despite facing initial challenges.

The project’s journey was not without hurdles, as some opposition political leaders attempted to discourage participation. However, the resilient and forward-thinking residents of Entumbane refused to be swayed from their pursuit of development. With a resounding call to action, each of the 7 000 households in the suburb was invited to contribute just US$1, while stakeholders such as businesses, churches, schools, and transport operators were encouraged to donate a minimum of US$10 each.

Undeterred by baseless opposition, the residents saw the value and wisdom in this noble endeavour. They rallied together to build a stronger Entumbane, aligning with the spirit of the Second Republic’s philosophy that emphasises collective responsibility and community development.

The project’s visionary, Nkosentsha Mlilo, has consistently maintained that the initiative transcends politics and aims solely to benefit the residents of Entumbane. He expressed gratitude to all those who have contributed thus far, acknowledging their vital role in bringing the project closer to its realisation.

“We are excited about this project and want to commend all the residents and stakeholders of Entumbane who have generously contributed. We are confident that many more will join us on this journey,” said Mlilo, his enthusiasm contagious.

Mlilo emphasised the importance of accountability, affirming that every cent will be meticulously tracked and reported. As custodians of public funds, the organisers have entrusted reputable individuals with businesses to serve as custodians, fostering transparency and maintaining the highest standards of financial responsibility.

When questioned about the operational aspects of the ambulance, Mlilo explained that they have two options: either hire their own dedicated team of a driver and paramedic or collaborate with the City of Bulawayo for personnel. Regardless, the ambulance will be stationed at the Entumbane Clinic, ensuring quick and easy access for residents in need.

“Our aim is to provide ambulance assistance within five minutes of receiving a distress call, which is why it is crucial to have the ambulance stationed here at the Entumbane Clinic. We are also mindful of neighbouring suburbs like Emakhandeni, Njube, and Lobengula, who may require the services of our ambulance due to its proximity. However, an agreed fee will be set for those external services,” explained Mlilo, demonstrating a thoughtful approach to inclusivity.

Once implemented, Entumbane will proudly become the first suburb in Bulawayo to have its own ambulance, symbolising the community’s dedication to the well-being of its residents and setting an inspiring example for other neighbourhoods. — @skhumoyo2000
