FATIMA High School will play host to the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Matabeleland North provincial chess championships to select a team that will compete in the national finals next month in Masvingo.

A total of 196 learners from the seven Matabeleland North districts, Binga, Hwange, Nkayi, Bubi, Umguza, Tsholotsho and Lupane, will compete in seven boys’ and girls’ age groups; Under-13s, 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s, 18s and 20s.

The Matabeleland North provincial head-in-charge for chess Cheteni Tirison, the headmaster of Pashu High School in Binga, said their championships will start today and end on Friday.

“The tournament starts on Tuesday and ends on Friday. We expect teams to start arriving on Tuesday morning and each participant will pay $21, which will cover accommodation and food. The purpose of these games is to choose our provincial team that will compete in the National Scholar Championship from April 11 to 14 in Victoria High School, Masvingo. What will happen is that we will select four players per each age group, two boys and two girls,” said Tirison.
