Hundreds bid Moyo farewell

Speaker after speaker at the funeral service, which was attended by journalists from across the divide, businessmen, company executives, politicians, lawyers, soccer administrators and ordinary people praised Moyo who was popularly known as MaFree and described him as a dedicated worker.
Minister of Mines and Mining Development Obert Mpofu described Moyo as a uniting force who was a good listener and always willing to learn.

Minister Mpofu said the large crowd of mourners, which was arguably the biggest for a journalist, defined Moyo’s life.
“Moyo worked very well in Matabeleland North and during that time I was the Governor of the province. He was a dedicated journalist and the big crowd here is defining his life,” said Minister Mpofu, who also took the opportunity to announce that he would take care of the school needs of Moyo’s younger brother, who is doing his Upper Sixth form in Harare.
“I will pay his school fees and he will be living with my nephew, another journalist, Reason Mpofu. As for me, I have known Freedom’s family for a long time as I and his father were once councillors in the same local authority in the 1980s.”

He noted that the cross-section of mourners demonstrated the highest measure of unity among Zimbabweans.
ZBC general manager (finance) Retired Brigadier-General Elliot Kasu said the death of Moyo was a great loss to the public broadcaster and the nation as a whole.
He described him as a hero in the journalism fraternity and urged other journalists to emulate him and report accurately on the goings-on in the country.

He said Moyo had to be moved from Matabeleland North province to Harare because he had “outgrown the provincial leadership” and was ready for national duty.
Matabeleland South Provincial Governor Angeline Masuku said Moyo’s contribution to the country and the province was immeasurable and urged parents to nurture their children for their betterment.
Deputy Minister of Public Service Andrew Langa, who is also the Zanu-PF provincial chairman for Matabeleland South, praised Moyo for his consistency.

“Freedom never abandoned his work at ZBC, our public broadcaster. He stuck to his mandate of defending the nation through his pen and voice,” said Deputy Minister Langa.
The president of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, Dumisani Sibanda, described Moyo as a hero in the journalism fraternity.
“If there was a heroes’ acre for journalists, we would today be burying Freedom there,” said Sibanda.

Other dignitaries who attended the burial were Zanu-PF Politburo member Abigail Damasane, former Gwanda mayor Rido Mpofu, Member of the House of Assembly for Mberengwa East, Makhosini Hlongwane, Highlanders chairman Themba Ndlela, Zimbabwe National Supporters Association president Eddie Nyatanga, former MP for Makonde West and veteran journalist Kindness Paradza and the Criminal Investigations

Department co-ordinator for Matabeleland Assistant Commissioner Erasmus Makodza.

Others were the deputy commander of the police in Bulawayo, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Gora and former CID co-ordinator for Matabeleland Retired Assistant Commissioner Alexio Paradzai.
He is survived by four children.
