THE Hwange Golf Development committee has launched the inter schools golf tournament to be held at the Hwange Golf Club this Sunday.
The organiser of the event, Stephen “Zero” Simukai who is set to turn professional soon, confirmed the event which he said was part of the preparations for the Matabeleland Junior Golf league to be held at the Bulawayo Golf Club at the end of the month.
“We have pupils from Coalfields, St Ignatius, Lwendulu, Thomas Coulter and Hwange High School being trained by our junior coach Mubita Njamba.
We expect these youngsters to represent the region as professionals in future. My committee will continue to engage various educational institutions as part of measures to promote golf in this part of the country.” said Simukai.

Out of the initial 150 young golfers, 27 have committed to take part in the competition as the youngsters seek to emulate Keith Banda, a Thomas Coulter Primary school pupil who is now playing off a handicap 10.

Banda is without doubt the best young golfing talent to emerge from the province.
Other junior golfers who have vastly improved since Njamba started his programme in 2012 include Coalfields Primary School pupils Yanusai Banda, Loyd Madyegasva Jnr, and Edward Museke.

From Hwange High School, young golfers who have emerged include Kudzanai Zulu, Amon Ncube, and Jasper Zulu who all played alongside seasoned golfers in the recently held Kamandama Memorial golf tournament

The three pupils were sponsored by Chaferfly Enterprises managing director Godfrey Nyakudya whose company has for years been the main sponsor of the annual fundraising event.

“May I take this opportunity to thank Nyakudya for his gesture towards the young golfers. It is clear he has a passion for golf and with such people like him, this sport will definitely grow and be appreciated in this town.

“On the upcoming event this weekend, I am happy with the preparations but I am concerned that girls are not particpating. I know parents always have security concerns over their girls but there is really no need to worry since teachers are always there to act in loco-parentis.” said Njamba.

The Bulawayo tourney will be held on June 29.
These monthly Matabeleland Junior league tournaments are held to grade the young golfers who then accumulate points on the Order Of Merit table.
The golfers selected then represent the province at national level.
