HWANGE produced a blistering performance that crash-landed Chapungu in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match played at the Colliery Stadium yesterday.

A good header by anchorman Collen Muleya on the stroke of halftime and a debut goal by Delic Murimba in the 81st minute maintained new Hwange coach Bigboy Mawiwi’s perfect home record since taking charge last month.

An overlapping Crispen Dicksen sent in a cross that Muleya met with a glancing header into the far post beyond the reach of Chapungu goalkeeper Talbert Shumba.

It was only Muleya’s second goal for Hwange, his first coming in August 2015 in the 1-0 win over Chicken Inn at Luveve Stadium.

Murimba grabbed the cushion goal three minutes after coming on for Justine Kaunda by flicking a clever Crybert Muvuti cross past a bemused Shumba to seal maximum points.

The airmen had come into the match with their tails up after bombing army side Black Rhinos 3-0. But Hwange, who were licking their wounds after a 1-4 thumping by Ngezi Platinum Stars, had other ideas.

They pinned the visitors in their own half and almost went ahead in the 15th minute when right-back Dicksen’s cross was flicked onto the path of a well-positioned Muleya by Muvuti, only for the lanky anchorman to sky his effort from a few metres.

The threat temporarily jolted Chapungu into some life and they launched their first raid in the 26th minute through winger Tinei Chitora, who unleashed a screamer from the edge of the box that was dealt with by Hwange goalkeeper Taimon Mvula following a swift counterattack.

Two minutes later, striker Patrick Khumbula was allowed a free header, but his effort sailed inches over the bar.

Hwange then regained the momentum and took the lead through Muleya.

Chapungu were not given a chance to regroup as Chipangano started the second half by pressing the visitors and could have scored in the 48th minute had keeper Shumba not produced a brilliant save to deny Kaunda from a one-on-one situation.

Substitute Murimba, who was introduced in the 78th minute, then wrapped up the game for Hwange with the second goal three minutes after coming on.
Mawiwi was a happy man at the end of the game.

“I am happy because we deserved the win. The loss to Ngezi had some positive effects in it and we came with a game plan which worked today. I came knowing the big task at hand and we will continue to take each game as it comes,” said Mawiwi.

His Chapungu counterpart Tendai Chikuni said his boys were never in the game.

“We struggled throughout and we never played our normal game. We need to work on the inconsistencies. Credit to Hwange, they fought hard after coming from a loss. Such is football, we will work to correct today’s mistakes,” said Chikuni.
