Let us build sports facilities

COSMAS ZULUWe produce youngsters who are physically stronger, more mature than they were before when they left school.
The Zimbabwe education system is good in that it provides facilities for those still at school. A nation that doesn’t provide for its youth to get rid of excess energy in a healthy manner surely buys trouble for itself.
This is the biggest challenge facing us. I say that sports facilities have to be made available for youths when they leave school.

We have municipal managers sitting in these policy meetings coming up with policies to build more bottle stores, headmasters in the schools buying buses to ferry schoolchildren to sports activities yet they play on poor facilities, club chairmen busy blaming coaches for poor football yet the teams train on maize fields.

They fail to save funds just to grow turf on some of the pitches strewn around the  cities.
After saying these things, I can bet my last dollar as long as we put people in decision-making  positions who are not knowledgeable on the subject, failing at regional and international competitions will always haunt us to the next century.

Look at our neighbours, Zambia.  When they made Kalusha Bwalya football association head, they won the Africa Cup of Nations in his first term in office.
You cannot elect Cosmas Zulu to head a doctors’ association. What do you mean? More people will die.

ZIMBABWE WARRIORS TECHNICAL TEAM
I am not blaming you, the problem facing the national team has been there before you. I just would like to advise you the next time you set your team please consider the current positions the players have been playing at their clubs. For instance, Hardlife Zvirekwi has been playing as a midfielder at Caps United, Eric Chipeta as a right back at Hwange FC and Milton Ncube as an attacking player at Highlanders.  It’s difficult to get some understanding of these players in four days of training.

If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

WHAT MAKES A COACH
The best former footballers do not necessarily make the best coaches. The technical gifts that make a footballer great have little in common with the gifts that make a coach and indeed they may constitute actual drawbacks.

For a good coach, a gifted player could take his gifts for granted and wonder why his colleagues do not respond to his instincts or why they do not indeed have the same instincts since his tricks almost always succeeded. He does not need to occupy his time wondering why not.

THE ART OF CONCENTRATION
Every player has lapses in concentration during the game. When you find concentration wavering you have a real go at yourself, keep your mind on your job, slap your thighs or pinch yourself.

Joke – A soccer player jumps on the bed and wife asks: “Why are you still wearing sheen pads?”
Player answers: “Hey, it’s a club rule, we have to wear pads all the time.”
