A 30-YEAR-OLD man from Gwanda is battling for life in the intensive care unit at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) after his cousin ripped open his stomach with a knife over $1, 50.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident which occurred on Monday at around 7PM in Mtshazo Village.

He said Amkela Moyo (38), who is on the run, gave Kholisani Sibanda $1, 50 to buy beer for them but he converted it to personal use resulting in the altercation.

“I can confirm that we recorded an attempted murder case in Mtshazo Village where a man stabbed his brother in the stomach with an okapi knife over $1, 50. The now hospitalised Kholisani Sibanda was drinking beer with his brother Amkela Moyo at Mtshazo Business Centre.

“Moyo gave his younger brother $1, 50 and told him to buy beer. Sibanda didn’t buy the beer but went on to use the money. On their way home, Moyo confronted his (cousin) brother and demanded the money back since he had not bought the beer but Sibanda failed to produce it. Moyo produced an okapi knife and stabbed his brother in the stomach leaving some intestines protruding,” he said.

Chief Insp Ndebele said Moyo fled from the scene leaving his victim lying on the ground.

He said Sibanda was assisted by some people who ferried him to the Gwanda District Hospital.

He was transferred to UBH where he is still admitted.

The police spokesperson said investigations were underway and appealed to members of the public who have information on Moyo’s whereabouts to report at any police station near them.

“We continue to appeal to members of the public to desist from engaging in violence in a bid to resolve disputes. A man has been left seriously injured just because of $1, 50 which is a petty issue. To make matters worse these people are brothers.

“We also appeal to members of the public with information that could lead to the arrest of Moyo to contact any police station near them,” he said.
