PREPARATIONS for the 60th Matabeleland South Agricultural show have gathered momentum with traditional exhibitors already paying for their stands while a number of new inquiries have flooded the show society.

This year’s show will be held under the theme “Sustainable livelihoods through transformed agriculture.”

The much hyped show is expected to attract a lot of livestock farmers most of whom failed to grace the event last year because of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.

Farmers from approved zones only showcased their cattle at the show as the Department of Veterinary Services banned cattle movement in affected areas to prevent the spread of the disease.

The show’s information and publicity officer, Mr Mvelo Zondo, yesterday confirmed that everything was on the right track to stage a successful show.

“It’s that time of the year that we are preparing for the 60th edition of the Matabeleland South Agricultural Show that will be held under the theme ‘Sustainable livelihoods through transformed agriculture’. Our traditional exhibitors have already started booking for exhibition stands and we have also received a lot of new inquiries,” said Mr Zondo.

He said they expected to receive a lot of livestock this year unlike last year when there were a few farmers exhibiting livestock due to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

“Last year the number of cattle on exhibition was very low as compared to yester years. However, the Department of Veterinary Services has promised farmers that everything is under control. Therefore farmers are urged to bring their livestock both small and big. We’re looking forward to a successful show,” Mr Zondo said.

This year’s show will be held from August 11 to 13.

Last year, the Department of Veterinary Services only allowed cattle movements from Bulilima, Mangwe, Matobo South and Gwanda South.

Cattle farmers from other parts namely Insiza, Beitbridge, Umzingwane and Gwanda North did not take part because these were the most affected areas.
