Mountaineers, Rocks share spoils in Logan Cup

THE 2022/23 Logan Cup season first class cricket match between Mega Market Mountaineers and Southern Rocks ended as a draw at Harare Sports Club yesterday.

No winner could come out of the rain affected encounter on the final day which ended with Mountaineers batting on 23-0 in the second innings having bowled out their opponents   for 261 in the first. In their first innings, Mountaineers had scored 260 all out.

Skipper Timycen Maruma and Shingi Masakadza top scored in Mountaineers’s first innings, both players finishing with 63 runs each. The third highest run getter was Donald Tiripano with 32 runs.

With ball in hand for Rocks, Cuthbert Musoko was the key bowler, taking six wickets to finish with figures of 6/48 in 14 overs. He was supported by Takudzwa Chataira on the other end who picked up two wickets. 

In Rocks first innings, two half centuries were recorded from Roy Kaia and William Mashinge, who scored 61 and 52 runs respectively to help their side get a one run lead. The third leading run scorer for the Masvingo based side was Ben Curran with 36 runs on the board while Musoko chipped in with 33.

Another five-wicket haul was recorded, the latest coming from Masakadza who finished with figures of 5/42 in 8.5 overs. Tiripano took two scalps while the remaining three were taken by Fortune Mhlanga, Vincent Masekesa and Brian Bennett.

Eagles remain on top with 87 points followed by Rhinos on 61 and Mountaineers in third place with 60 points. Defending champions, Tuskers sit in position four with 49 points whilst bottom placed Rocks, who are yet to record a win have 38 points. -@brandon_malvin
