EVERYBODY has a Cal Vin (real name Calvin Nhliziyo) story and the latest rapper to pay homage to the late “Z’khuphani” singer is Mr Kata (real name Michael Katandika) who is dropping a single in Cal Vin’s honour today.

It is exactly three years since the late multi-award-winning hip-hop artiste Cal Vin drew his last breath after being a victim of a hit-and-run accident in 2020. Even though leads have grown cold, his legacy has been heating up by the day.

Mr Kata, who took a hiatus from the microphone after Cal Vin died said now was the opportune time to pick up where he left off.

“As a hip-hop artiste, I’ve been in the game for quite a while, but I had chilled on pushing music after we lost Cal Vin. I had too much anxiety but I’m back to push now and I think releasing this single now is a perfect tribute to Vin and the legacy he left behind.

“Since he (Cal Vin) died, the game hasn’t been the same and I really haven’t felt like putting out new projects. Losing him really did a number on us. I remember there was a time I used to get excited about dropping new music at the same time Vin, Asaph, Tytan, Guluva 7, and Kbrizzy were dropping. But now, I just record songs and when it’s time to release, anxiety kicks in and I become powerless, then I just put it off,” shared and emotional Mr Kata.

Mr Kata has alluded to “Burg Life” being a renaissance to his soul’s dearth and keeping in memory, Vin’s legacy.

The song features voice-overs by the late Vin and, “There are also three very emotional stories I told in this song. I hope people connect to them, and I hope it also opens their eyes to this #BurgLife”.

Burg is a colloquial word meaning the urban area, and in the song, Mr Kata talks of the pressures that come with being in town and trying to level up to peers.

In the song, Mr Kata converses with Cal Vin in his dreams. The chorus is actually Cal Vin speaking.

He credited the late rapper for supporting him with his clothing label Zvanhuwa Fashion before he died.

Before “Burg Life” Mr Kata released “Ex” as part of his comeback plan. – @MbuleloMpofu
