ZIMBAB WE national women’s rugby sevens’ captain Charity Mucucuti has declared that her side won’t be underdogs in the Africa Cup Women’s Sevens Rugby Championship tournament to be held at the Police Grounds in Harare from September 17-18.

South Africa, Madagascar, Tunisia, Namibia, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe will be competing in the championship.

“This is not our first time to compete in the African Women’s Sevens Championship.

The only difference is that when we participated before, there were more countries, but this time only the top eight will compete, which means it is going to be more competitive.

As the host nation, we have the advantage of playing at home and we expect a large turnout of supporters to rally behind the Lady Cheetahs,” Mucucuti said.

“We have played all the sevens’ teams before and we have new blood in the team.

“For most of them, it will be their first time to play against such big teams in Africa.”

She said such tournaments were good in that they exposed the girl child, especially schoolgirls, to quality ladies’ rugby.

Hosting the tournament is a major breakthrough for Zimbabwe women’s rugby, which has experienced a steady growth over the years.
