Thupeyo Muleya in Beitbridge
CRACK long distance runner Gibert Mutandiro won the inaugural Beitbridge Mayor’s half marathon on Saturday morning.

Mutandiro beat a field of 64 runners, romping home in one hour eight minutes and 13 seconds to claim the $100 prize money and a trophy.

The race held under the theme “Running against litter” was supported by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) to raise awareness among Beitbridge residents on proper solid waste management.

Morris Muleya finished second in one hour 20 minutes and Eugene Kelvin Mkwanazi claimed third position in one hour 25 minutes.

The 21km race started at Lutumba Business Centre and ended at Border Service Station in the town centre. No woman registered for the 21km run.

Cassious Moyo won the men’s 10km run followed by Khumbulani Moyo and Washington Chaminuka while Zivai Mataruse claimed the women’s 10km race followed by Sheila Joni and Enesly Sibanda.

Nine-year-old Obey Makamu was victorious in the boys’ Under-12 10km race.

Businessmen Nkululeko Mbedzi and Nyasha Makambe, businesswomen Patricia Ndlovu, Regina Ndlovu and Nomphumelelo Chigwinya as well as Beitbridge Town Council secretary Loud Ramakgapolo also took part in the 10km run.

Beitbridge Town Council chairperson Showa Moyo said:

“Through this marathon, we raised awareness about littering around town and on the highways.

“Many thanks to those that took part in the cleanup exercise.”
