THE Officer Commanding ZRP Bulawayo, Senior Assistant Commissioner Stephen Mutamba has praised police officers in the province for their commitment and dedication to sport development. The Bulawayo top cop was speaking during a prize presentation ceremony for the province’s Inter Stations Soccer League that was won by Western Commonage.

He said participating in sporting activities was not an option but a must for all police officers. “It has been a tough and gruelling journey to get here but through your dedication, perseverance and passion for the sport, you all managed to complete the journey.

“Realism detects that a physically well body carries a healthy mind. It is therefore imperative that the culture of exercise in the province should not be an option but a must for all of us,” said Snr Ast Comm Mutamba.

The 16- team league is bankrolled by a City sports shop, Townsend and Butcher. “Bulawayo is a blessed province, not so many of our compatriots in the organisation have been privileged to have men of Peter Leondios (Townsend and Butcher) who has supported us for more than 20 years,” said Snr Ass Comm Mutamba.

He said the sponsorship was an example of partnership between the police force and the communities they operate in. “Our officers are always fit and strong because of their participation in sporting activities and as such are most of the time equal to the task of apprehending criminals,” said the police chief.

He said communication and cohesion within police ranks had greatly improved as a result of interacting through sport. The league champions Western Commonage received a full kit plus a floating trophy courtesy of the sponsor and $150 cash.

Runners up Nkulumane received a full kit plus $100 while third placed Queens Park were also presented with a kit plus $75 cash. Fourth placed Entumbane walked away $50 richer. All cash prizes were provided by Snr Ast Comm Mutamba’s office.
