Raza holds sixes record at T20 World Cup Sikandar Raza

Brandon Moyo, Sports Reporter
ZIMBABWEAN all-rounder Sikandar Raza has not been shy of making and breaking records in white ball cricket as he recorded the most number of sixes in the recently ended International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Raza scored a total of 11 sixes in the tournament, one more than World Cup winner Alex Hales of England and Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis who had 10. Raza is the only Zimbabwean in the top 10 as the next, Wessly Madhevere, is ranked in position 46 with two under his name.

The other seven players in the top 10 are Andrew Balbirnie (Ireland), Marcus Stoinis (Australia), Suryakumar Yadav (India), Rilee Rossouw (South Africa), Max O’Dowd (Netherlands), Glenn Phillips (New Zealand) and KL Rahul (India).

Raza’s 11 sixes came in the eight matches he played.

The most sixes was not the only record that belongs to the Zimbabwean at the World Cup, he was also the only player to score over 200 runs and pick up 10 wickets.

Raza finished with 219 runs at a strike rate of 147, 97 and a high score of 82, the best by a Zimbabwean at an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, bettering Brendan Taylor’s 60 not out in a shock five wicket triumph over Australia at the  inaugural tournament held in South Africa in 2007.

With the 11 sixes scored, Raza also notched up 16 fours which was the 11th most in the tournament.

With ball in hand, the all-rounder’s wickets came at an average of 15,60 with the best figures of 3/19 against West Indies.

With his impressive stats, Raza was voted into the Team of the Tournament.

Harare Sports Club

Sadly, with no international matches lined up for Zimbabwe in what remains of 2022, Raza will not add more to his magnificent records this year.

Zimbabwe’s talisman recorded 753 international runs at Harare Sports Club during 2022, 540 in nine One-Day Internationals (including three centuries), and 213 in six T20Is.

The previous record for most runs in one ground in a calendar year was 738 by Pakistan’s Zaheer Abbas in Lahore in 1982, his total made up of 401 and three Tests, with 215 against India and 134 facing up to Sri Lanka, plus 337 in in three ODIs, in each of which he scored a century. — @brandon_malvin
