THE Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (RoilBAA) nominees were released yesterday with breakout artiste Sikhosana Band getting the nod, politicians Dr Obert Mpofu and Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube nominated, while there were no nominees for visual arts.

Hailing from Nkayi, Sikhosana Band, who went viral on social media mid this year, has been nominated in the Outstanding Newcomer Across All Genres. He is nominated with Helen Nyati, La Dee, Mandie Mae, Preyung and Soul Dudes.

Political heavyweight, Zanu PF secretary for administration and Politburo member Dr Mpofu is nominated in the Outstanding Literary Work -Non-Fiction for his book On the Shoulders of Struggle. Another Zanu PF Politburo member Rtd Col Tshinga Dube is in the running for same award with his book, Quiet Flows the Zambezi and motivational speaker Njabulo Moyo making up the list.

One new category Outstanding Ndebele Literary Work was added to encourage more writers in Zimbabwe’s ‘minority languages’ to submit their works next year. This year three books Iziga Zalumhlaba written by Onesimo Mpofu, Untikolotshi by Mihla Sitsha Tsheza and Umhlaba ungihlanekele by Nonduduzo Ncube have been nominated.

RoilBAA spokesperson Nkululeko Nkala said this year’s awards have both been challenging and exciting.

“Creatives have been embracing the new normal and finding their space in the digital space. The RoilBAA has had to follow suit. You will note a few changes from our original announcements on August 1,” said Nkala.

He said there has been an overwhelming submission of Ndebele literature hence the addition of the category in literary arts.

“We would like to take this opportunity to encourage other minority languages to start writing so we see more entries in the next edition,” said Nkala.

He said there were some people whose works deserve special mention although not nominated.

“Some Special Mentions to some works which may not be nominated today but the work is very visible and encouraged.

Butshilo Nleya with his Words as Bullets Play, Vagina Monologues, Freedom Poet, Khuxman and Msheznana for all the socio-political work. Also, Fusion Media Group (FMG), Credisi, Byo Arts Festival & Sabela Studios for allowing artists to be seen,” said Nkala.
