THE best netball and soccer player of the Jonah Primary Schools Tournament to be held at Nyabane Primary in Bulilima today will be rewarded with scholarships.

South Africa-based businessman Jonathan Ndlovu, who is into the construction industry, is sponsoring the tournament to the tune of R30 000, up from R20 000 last year.

Ndlovu said since the tournament’s inception in 2011, all schools that have participated now have decent football kits and it was time to move up a gear.

“The community appreciates that such tournaments are important in nurturing talented young players. I have now decided to pay school fees for athletes who will be voted as the tournament’s best footballer and the best netball player,” said Ndlovu.

He also sponsors Plumtree-based Division Two side Mainline FC, the only team from the border town that competes in the Bulawayo Province Division Two League.

Six primary schools will compete in the seventh edition of the Jonah Soccer and Netball Tournament.

The schools are Tshankwa, Bezu, Diba, Phumuza, Mlomwe and hosts Nyabane.

Tshankwa are the defending soccer champions while Mlomwe won last year’s netball title.

The winners of the boys’ tournament will get R5 000, a trophy and playing kit while the netball champions will walk away with R3 000, a trophy and a playing kit.

Doctor Mguni, a member of the tournament’s organising committee said: “We’re ready to roll and everyone is looking forward to the competition. We’re grateful to Ndlovu for contributing to the development of sport in the area. The schools and community are looking forward to a great sporting day”.  — @ZililoR.
