SIX people died while seven others escaped with various injuries after two vehicles they were travelling in were involved in a head-on collision along the Kwekwe-Gokwe road on Sunday evening.

A Nissan NP300 which was travelling towards Kwekwe and a Honda Fit which was travelling in the opposite direction were involved in a head-on collision at the 15-kilometer peg just outside Kwekwe.

The truck had three passengers on board while the Honda Fit had eight passengers.

Drivers from both cars died on the spot.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident.

“We confirm a fatal road traffic accident in which six people were killed whilst seven others were injured at the 15 kilometre peg along Kwekwe-Gokwe Road on 21 May 2023 about 6PM,” he said.

Apart from the drivers of the two vehicles, two passengers died on the spot while two others died on admission to hospital.
“As a result, of the accident both drivers and two passengers died on the spot whilst two other passengers died upon admission at Kwekwe General Hospital.

“The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital Mortuary for postmortem whilst five of the injured victims are admitted at the same institution,” said the police spokesperson.

The other two injured were transferred to Gweru Provincial Hospital. Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said three of the deceased have been identified by their next of kin.

“Three victims were positively identified by their next of kin as Edward Mutimbu (40) of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Headquarters, Tafadzwa Chokera (24) of Zhombe Business Centre and Anna Muzeziwa (42) of Zhombe Mission Hospital.

The other three are yet to be identified by their next of kin,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi urged motorists to exercise caution.
“The ZRP implores motorists to be patient on the roads and above all adhere to all road rules and regulations,” he said.
