Southern Region Div One teams to play simultaneously

Ricky Zililo, Senior Sports Reporter
ZIFA Southern Region Division One League teams will play their last five games of the season simultaneously in the spirit of Fair Play.

Six games are left before the season ends, with the title race a two-team affair between former Premiership sides Hwange and Tsholotsho, who both want a quick return to the topflight.

Hwange lead the league table with 55 points from 24 games, while Tsholotsho are five points adrift in second place.

Augustine Ndlovu from the Zifa Southern Region said: “The region’s position has always been that all games are played simultaneously when we are left with five matches. After this weekend’s games we will then start to have all teams playing on a same day and at the same time.”

Focus will be on the title contenders Hwange and Tsholotsho.

Ndlovu said the number of teams to be relegated will depend on how many clubs the region can accommodate from the Premiership.

Bulawayo City are heading to the First Division and Bulawayo Chiefs, who won the Southern Region Division One League title last season, are not safe either, as they are just a point above the drop zone.

The Southern Region will promote four teams to Division One at the end of the season. Two teams will come from Zifa Bulawayo Metropolitan Province and two from Zifa Matabeleland North Province.

If Chiefs survive relegation and Bulawayo City sink, it means the bottom four sides Main Line, ZRP Bulawayo, Toronto and NRZ Leopards will be axed to Division Two.

Zifa Southern Region, which agreed to an 18-team league in 2017, can also resort to a similar number of teams next season, meaning that the bottom two sides Toronto and NRZ Leopards will be relegated.

The Southern Region Division One League is running with 16 teams for the 2018 season after failing to get 18 clubs to affiliate at the beginning of the year.
