THE Zimbabwe sports sector is conspicuous by its absence at the 60th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, with only the Premier Soccer League and the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation taking up exhibition space. 

The fair started on Tuesday with 532 local exhibitors and 16 foreign countries represented at this historic trade fair.

However, a visit to Hall 2 where the sports sector was expected to showcase its services presented an unfortunate state of affairs as there were no sports organisations, except the PSL and the ministry, while the Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association is expected to hold exhibition matches tomorrow and Saturday. 

“We will have live boxing and taekwondo matches on Friday and Saturday. We want to showcase what we have as a ministry in our endeavour to make sure the sport and art industry is turned into a viable economic wheel for the nation. 

“We believe one can make a living through sports. We have economies in other parts of the world that survive through the sports sector,” said Ranson Madzamba, the ministry’s corporate and external affairs principal officer. 

This year’s trade fair will be officially opened by Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, tomorrow.
